Wedding planning is getting serious. You have a FIANCE and the venue you have been dreaming of is available. Next up? Choosing your photographer.

Saying “YES” was a no brainer. (check!)

The perfect venue? You’ve probably been imagining that for years now. (check!)

But the photographer? How do you choose just one person to document your day when there are so many incredible and talented artists available in your area? (need some help?)

While it may seem daunting reaching out to all of your vendors at once, here are some things every couple should consider when choosing their wedding and engagement photographer.

Consider Their Style

Before you start reaching out to photographers, put some thought into what you want your photos to look like. Then search for photographers that match your vision.

How do you imagine your wedding day images to look when you have them printed and designed in an album? Some of the ways you may hear photographers describe their work can be: bright and airy, classic and timeless, or dark and moody. Just to name a few!

My personal editing and shooting style aims to create a combination of bright, romantic and timeless photos. You can find that mimic classic film portraits, too. I believe they both beautiful and airy and will allow you to look back years down the road and still enjoy the way you see yourself in them.

(Opposed to the way I look back on images from high school. I edited photos from my point and shoot camera using the editing app called Picnic. Those “trendy edits” are out of style now and I cringe looking at myself in them. Anyone else have embarrassing high school photos with their friends? Haha!)

Their Personality

Would you believe me if I said that wedding photographer will be with you more on your wedding day than your soon to be spouse? It’s true! And because you will be spending so much time with them, I think it is best to ensure you are compatible with their personality! Can you imagine yourself with them throughout every intimate moment of your wedding day? The best way to gauge them is to get to know them before you hire them!

I personally love getting to know my clients before we make anything official. I’ll like to get together for a coffee (or two!) with potential brides for casual conversations before talking all things wedding! Before then, you can also follow along with them on social media to get a feel for them as well. You can come say hello and hang out with me on Instagram 🙂

The Wedding Experience

And one last tip for today would be to consider how involved you want your photographer to be in your wedding day and the planning process. Are you looking for someone to assist with creating a timeline? to provide vendor recommendations? schedule engagement and bridal sessions? I’m here for that! I love being able to assist in any way possible. But that is just the Type 2 (the helper!) coming out in me. I love being able to serve and provide and be your go to gal. I want to create an overall experience from initial planning to the wedding.

But others couples may not need that, or appreciate those things. They may want to connect with a photographer who shows up on the wedding day, takes their photos and delivers them. There is nothing wrong with that, either. But it is important to know there are varying experiences that photographers want to offer to their couples.

So I know this was a lot to take in but I hope it helps you in your search while choosing your photographer.

Maybe you’ve read through this and are still thinking I may be the photographer for you, let’s schedule a coffee date together soon! Send me a message here and I’ll talk to you soon 🙂
